Five Questions with Sandy Geroux
This post marks the first in a series of “Five Questions with.” Our hope is to share some insight into the benefit of NSA Central Florida membership and some lessons from some of our members to enhance the “Business of Speaking.” We do hope you enjoy and gain from their advice and insight.
Your name and what you speak on.
Sandy Geroux, M.S. Leadership, Customer Service, Staff Motivation & Training
What is something you have learned that has impacted the business of speaking in your organization or firm? I’ve learned that you need to select a market that has the budget to hire you. If not, even if you love that market, you will be stuck doing low-fee engagements. So find a market that’s right for you and that pays, which will enable you to stay in business while also serving the other market with lower-fee engagements.
Why has NSA CF been a help to your business? I have benefited from seeing and learning from other experienced professionals, from stagecraft to marketing and from training to keynoting. I have also made some incredible, lifelong friends at this chapter.
What would you tell someone just starting out? Find and focus on your message, and develop a great program; then never stop selling/prospecting (which is very different from marketing, especially if you try to market via social media). If you stop selling, it will take a very long time to get any consistency in your income in this (or any) business.
If you could do it all over again, what would you change, if anything?
I’d prospect more consistently, right from the start.
